Talbot

The Richard Talbot who came to Ireland with King Henry II was the ancestor of several distinct Talbot septs including of course the main branch or sept of the family, the Talbots of Malahide, the subject of this article.

Over the centuries a number of important Talbot septs arose. They included : Talbots of Feltrim and Belgard; Talbots of Fassaghroe and Rathdown; Talbots of Dardistown; Talbots of Robertstown; Talbots of Templeogue and Mount Talbot;  Talbots of Carton.

Like their relatives in Malahide their fortunes ebbed and flowed, they all suffered tragedies, many got married and many did not. They were, like the Malahide Talbots, Catholic to begin with but with the pressures of the times they lived in some forsook the faith of their fathers, did the pragmatic thing and became Protestants.

In this study it is not proposed to delve into the marriages of the many siblings of the main heirs unless some outstanding events occurred in their lives.

Just to make the article more interesting there are some details of a number of the Talbot sub-septs and outstanding achievers.
