Carew of Co. Wexford, Co. Waterford, and Co. Tipperary

Robert Carew who inherited Ballynamona, Co. Waterford,  from his uncle and Castleboro from his father (who died in 1708), was a J. P. for both Wexford and Waterford and High Sheriff of Waterford in 1711. He was also Portreeve of Enniscorthy, in 1683. Robert is also noted as being the receiver of the ‘Custome of the Markett’ of Enniscorthy in 1689.

Lynn Carew, Robert’s youngest brother, was the ancestor of the Carews of Wodenstown, Co. Tipperary.

He married Elizabeth the daughter of John Shapland, a wealthy merchant of Wexford town and his wife Ellen Bond. Elizabeth was co-heir with her sisters of the Shapland wealth and property. Her sisters were Catherine the wife of William Hore of Harperstown and Christiana the wife of William Swiny of Ballyteige. Elizabeth’s fortune included estates in Wexford and Waterford and much personal property.
