Agar of Kilkenny

The Agar/Flood Duel

They met in the afternoon of the 25th August. Rothe acted as Agar’s second and Gervase Parker Bushe acted for Flood. Bushe measured the twelve paces and both men took their stance. When the order was given to fire Agar shot first but missed his target. Flood had delayed his shot as he was in the act of taking a pinch of snuff. Agar took his second pistol and then shouted at Flood to fire. The shot was fatal, and Agar fell mortally wounded. It was said that Flood was distraught when he stood over the dying man. He then rode off to get medical assistance, but Agar died a short time later.
