This famous Wexford family spread its wings in the centuries following their advent to Ireland during the 12th-century Norman invasion. They became the owners of extensive estates in Wexford following their initial grant of the area around Ballymagir where they built their first castle. But, like many of their ilk, in the course of time they became more Irish than the Irish themselves. In the 19th century, Richard Devereux made a fortune in shipping and became one of the wealthiest men in Ireland.
