Byrne/O’Byrne Part 1
is the latest publication from Arthur Kavanagh, the Bunclody Co. Wexford born historian and author.
This new book complements his previous books in this genre which dealt with the great Leinster tribes of O’Nolan and Kavanagh.

The O’Byrnes proved to be one of the last Gaelic tribes in Ireland to accept English rule and this is proven by the fact that Wicklow was not shired until 1606. Irish was the spoken language in the territory right up to time of the Cromwellian Wars in the mid 17th century. Even as late as 1590 Irish culture as practiced for more than a thousand years was still being used in the great hall of Fiach McHugh’s Ballinacor in wild Glenmalure.
Part 2 which will be published in the Spring of 2016 and will deal with the break up of the O’Byrne septs following the Cromwellian Confiscations. The author will also treat of the descendants of many of the prominent O’Byrne families, the lands they lost and the fate of their lands.
