Fowler

According to family tradition Sir Robert Fowler, a Crusader, was knighted by King Richard I following the siege of Acre in 1191. The progenitor of this family and the first to come to Ireland was Robert Fowler who was born in England in Co. Lincolnshire the eldest son of George Fowler and Mary Hurst. After finishing in Cambridge, Robert received a prestigious appointment as one of the Chaplains to King George II. He was consecrated Bishop of Killaloe and Killfenora in 1773 and two years later was appointed Archbishop of Dublin. A seat on the Privy Council followed and in 1783 the Archbishop was made the first Chancellor of the newly established Order of St. Patrick.
