Alcock of Wilton, Co. Wexford
The Alcock family of Wilton were among the established landed families of County Wexford. Emerging in the county during the seventeenth century, they became closely associated with Wilton Castle near Bree, overlooking the River Slaney. Over successive generations the family formed part of the Protestant landed structure that shaped the political, agricultural, and social life of south-east Ireland.
Wilton Castle, occupying a commanding position above the river, became the principal seat of the family. Though the site had earlier medieval associations, the present house largely reflects nineteenth-century rebuilding in the Gothic Revival style. The surrounding demesne lands formed a substantial estate and contributed significantly to the local economy. Members of the Alcock family served as magistrates, sheriffs, and figures of county influence, reflecting the responsibilities typically assumed by landed families of their standing.
One of the most dramatic episodes connected with the family was the fatal duel of 1807, widely regarded as the last duel fought in County Wexford. The encounter, arising from political and personal tensions, ended in tragedy and left a lasting impression upon local memory. It remains one of the most striking events associated with Wilton and forms an important chapter in the family’s history.
Like many Irish landed houses, the Alcocks experienced the profound changes brought about by the nineteenth-century Land Acts. The traditional estate system upon which their position rested gradually altered, and Wilton itself passed through periods of decline before later restoration. Nevertheless, the architectural and documentary legacy of the Alcock family remains firmly embedded in the history of County Wexford.
