The Tottenham family became very important in the New Ross area of Co. Wexford and the Hook area where they owned Loftus Hall and its estate. In later times they acquired large estates in Co. Wicklow.
Originally from England it would appear that the first of the family settled in Youghal in Co. Cork but soon moved to Wexford.
The progenitor of the Wexford/Wicklow Tottenhams was a Charles Tottenham known as ‘Tottenham in his Boots’.
Charles’s son John married an heiress – a daughter of the Marquess of Ely who owned a large estate in the south of Co. Wexford. Their mansion was Loftus Hall near the Hook Head.
